History – Mercedes-Benz 500E (W124) – 1991
Introduced in 1990, the Mercedes-Benz 500E is widely regarded as one of the finest performance sedans of the modern era. Developed as the flagship model of the W124 range, the 500E was designed to combine understated luxury with exceptional performance and uncompromising build quality.
Due to limited production capacity at Mercedes-Benz, development and assembly were carried out in close cooperation with Porsche. Bodies were manufactured by Mercedes-Benz, then transported to Porsche’s facility in Zuffenhausen for installation of the drivetrain, suspension, and major mechanical components, before being returned to Mercedes for final assembly and quality control. Much of this process was done by hand, contributing to the car’s legendary reputation for craftsmanship.
Power comes from the 5.0-liter M119 V8, delivering strong performance while maintaining the refined driving character expected of a Mercedes-Benz. The chassis featured a wider track, reinforced suspension, and upgraded brakes, while exterior changes were intentionally subtle, resulting in a discreet yet muscular appearance—the classic “sleeper” concept.
